The PEP Family Heart Study Nuremberg

     Design

  • The Prevention Education Program PEP is a community-based prospective family study for cardiovascular risk assessment and lifestyle advice with a
    15 years’ follow-up (1993 / 94 - 2008 / 09).

  • First graders and their families from 92% of all elementary school districts in Nuernberg participated in this study.

  • Yearly surveys were performed with structured interviews including personal and family history, physical activity, smoking and nutritional habits, anthropometric examination, fasting blood analyses, seven days weighted dietary protocols.

  • On the basis of the resulting personal health- and nutrition passports individual yearly instructions and cooking courses for lifestyle amendments were performed.

Aims

1.   Assessment and follow-up of cardiovascular risk factors in children and
their families.

2.   Risk reduction by individual continuos instructions on healthy lifestyle
behaviour together with th whole family.


The project consists of 6 parts allowing separate evaluation:

1.
Prevalence of CVD risk factors
in a healthy population by a structured interview and physical examination of the participating family members.

2
.
Prevalence of established and emerging CVD risk factors by analyses of
fasting
blood  samples in those subjects who completed step 1.

3.
Documentation (PRODI; SPSS 15.0 for windows) of individual nutrition by
7 days
weighted dietary protocols in those individuals having completed steps
1 +
2.

4.
General health education by a yearly report, cooking courses, slide walking courses, seminars and on demand telefone advice with additionally written informations for all participants.

5.
Special individual advice on a healthy life style on the basis of the individual health and nutrition passports in the families of the intervention group

6.
Evaluation of the effects of lifestyle intervention on CVD risk factors  in the PEP population.
